Well it's definitely broketober time and the game I have been playing most recently has been Arkham Origins. let me tell you, when I first booted up the game (after having to type in all the pre order codes and download all that stuff) I was really excited and thought that game was completely amazing....for about the first 3 hours. Then I got to encounter the awesome thing of the game crashing after trying to load the title screen. (I play the 360 version by the way) The only way I could get passed this was to install the game to my hard drive and then everything was fine...Until I tried to boot the game up the next day when the game froze/crashed on me FIVE TIMES!!! Had to restart the entire console each time. Gave up after the 5th time for the day. Tried to play the game the next day....crashed about 5 to 7 more times. Can you tell how happy I was? You can't even imagine it... The game is actually pretty dang good too (when it works, the controls tend to disagree with me a lot) It's a game I would recommend playing because I genuinely had fun playing in (when I wasn't ticked off about having to redo entire boss fights).
Why am I ranting about this right now? Well this actually seems to be a very common theme that keeps popping up in new games. The developers are starting to push out unfinished games and just figure... meh we'll just put out some patches a week or two after the launch, they won't mind. They can live with a glitchy start, we already got the money out of them. I'm sorry, but fuck no it shouldn't work like that. Why is this acceptable now? Some one explain why this is acceptable in gaming now? To me, Arkham Origins felt a little rushed and unfinished, like they wanted to add more to it but just didn't have time (or worse going to make us pay for it in DLC later). It just doesn't feel as fluid as the previous Arkham games (yes I know it's made by a different developer! that doesn't excuse the high expectations from the previous awesomeness!)
I want to like this game, I really do. The story was pretty dang good (even though it was pretty predictable) but it was also pretty short if you just go from main mission to main mission (maybe 8-10 hours at most note: factor in every time I had to restart the console and redo a 30 minute boss fight). The gameplay is still fun even if the free flow combat feels just a little bit unresponsive sometimes (and cheap hits, can't forget those). I would recommend this game when (more than likely if) they get some needed patches to fix all these stupid technical issues that "magically" got passed testing (hint they didn't really look and probably didn't care....wanted to get the money from a well known and popular game....or focusing more on the multiplayer which I haven't even touched yet.) I really hate when developers move resources to multiplayer more than the single player story... ( I like the story better!) I miss the days when developers actually cared more about the game itself rather than be greedy about the money and cashing in (looking at you Activision!)
I should probably stop the rant here so I'll catch you guys next time. Feel free to comment on what you think on any of this. Later
